2013 season comes to an end at Kolesa

The final meeting of the 2013 racing season was held on the second Saturday in November, a mild autumn afternoon, in front of a good crowd at Kolesa, which is a village just north of the Kladruby stud. The main event - a Category III crosscountry race - was won by Nebrius, owned by Vasury Kolesa and trained by Pavlina Surova. The owner and trainer are our hosts at Kolesa, who have kept this small tidy course running for many years.

Josef Vana senior is a name that keeps cropping up. He trained three winners over jumps on the day, all in Category IV races. He then went on to the Gambrinus Liga football match between Mlada Boleslav and Viktoria Plzen, where he was given a Mlada Boleslav shirt with number 8 - for his number of wins in the Velka Pardubicka - and kicked the match off. Vana ended up as our champion trainer over jumps yet again. However, Greg Wroblewski trained the winner of the Velka and was for most of the season not far behind Vana's number of winners, though he trains only half as many horses. And if our championship were decided on prize money won, and not on races won, Greg would have been the clear champion.

Josef Vana junior rode two of the winners, and prevented Dusan Andres overtaking him in the jumps jockeys' championship. This was Josef junior's third Czech jumps jockeys' championship.

The afternoon at Kolesa began with three low category flat races. Jaromir Safar would have needed to win all three to retain his flat jockeys' championship. After the first race, the championship belonged to Bauyrzhan Murzabayev. This young Kazakh jockey has made a very good impression in his first year and a half in the Czech Republic, and it is good to know that he intends to continue riding here for the forseeable future.
