Czech-bred Love Me wins the Slovak Derby: a bad weekend for favourites

In all the major races at Bratislava and at Most last weekend, the favourites were beaten. In a desperate finish to the Slovak Derby, 78:1 outsider Love Me got up in the last stride to beat another outsider, Victory Tiger, and odds-on favourite, Lac Leman, by a short head and a nose. Love Me had also been at a long price when he finished 4th in the Czech Derby, four weeks earlier. Czech-bred Love Me is by Egerton, out of Czech-bred Lorellai (Look Honey). Egerton also sired Taggerton, which finished 3rd in the 2013 Czech Derby and then won the 2013 Slovak St Leger. Both Taggerton and Love Me were bred at the Napajedla Stud. Love Me is owned by Rabbit Trhový Štěpánov, trained by Allan Petrlík, and was ridden by Jan Verner.

At Most on Saturday, the Czech Oaks was won by Irish-bred Mary Yeats, by Yeats out of Mystery Hill (Danehill), from Daily Hit and the favourite, Lužnice. Mary Yeats is owned by Stanislav Chudáček, whose first classic success this was, and is trained by Helena Vocásková. In the Velká Mostecká Steeeplechase, course specialist Hetman Polny, owned by Jockey Club lawyer, Jan Červenka, trained by Pavlína Baštová and ridden by Jan Kratochvil, was too good for the hot favourite, Sokol.

At Kolesa on Sunday, horses from the local Vasury Kolesa stable, trained by the racecourse owner’s daughter, Pavlína Sůrová, and ridden by Jakub Kocman, won the first three races over fences. In the next race, the main event of the day, the Category II Elektrovasury Prize, the sponsor’s horse, Nebrius, came close to providing  a fourth winner in four races for the Sůra family and for Jan Kocman,  but was narrowly beaten into 2nd place, behind Budapest.
