The big race day at Wroclaw is on Sunday, with Czech and Swedish raiders

The Wielka Wroclawska steeplechase and the Wielka Partynicka hurdle will be run at Wroclaw Partynice racecourse on Sunday, September 4th. There has been a strong revival of steeplechasing at Wroclaw in recent years, and Sunday’s meeting will be the racecourse’s biggest single day of racing in modern times.

Czech riders still predominate at Wroclaw, and there are plenty of strong Czech-trained entries in all the races over obstacles. One race that the Czech-trained horses may not win is the Wielka Partynicka, over hurdles. Polish-trained Inferna won really well on the classical steeplechase course at Pardubice earlier this year, and I am told that Calvados, trained by Dennis Persson, is the best Swedish hurdler for some time. Calvados will be ridden by veteran Swedish jumps jockey Niklas Lovén, who also has the ride on Czech-trained Delight my Fire, which will be strongly favoured for the Wielka Wroclawska.

Täby racecourse in Stockholm, which included a steeplechase course, was closed down in June of this year. The new Bro Park racecourse, which replaces Täby, was originally planned without a steeplechase course. However, a big campaign was launched, with support from Dostihový svět, and Bro Park is now to put on steeplechases, and not just flat racing with temparary hurdles on the flat track. However, the new Bro Park steeplechase course will not be ready this year.

There has been no steeplechasing in Sweden since the Swedish Grand National meeting at Strömshom in June, and there will be little or no steeplechasing in Sweden until 2017, when Bro Park should be ready.

The Wroclaw meeting will be a big day for Niklas Lovén, who has a total of five rides in the afternoon, some of them on Swedish-owned horses trained in the Czech Republic.
