The 123rd running of the Velka Pardubicka will be on Sunday, October 13th, 2013

In 2013, the Velka Pardubicka will return to its traditional date, the second Sunday in October. The race will be run on Sunday, October 13th.
The race was run on a Saturday this year in an attempt by the municipally-owned racecourse to help out another event held in Pardubice and supported by the municipal authorites, the Gold Helmet speedway tournament. The Gold Helmet is normally held one week before the Velka Pardubicka, but the date was changed in 2012 due to a clash in the European speedway calendar which meant that the top speedway riders could only come to Pardubice on October 14th - Velka Pardubicka day. It seems that the Pardubice speedway organisers accepted this date change without informing anyone, and the clash of dates only became known in about March of this year. The Czech Jockey Club reluctantly agreed to run the Velka on the Saturday for 2012 only, on condition that it revert to the second Sunday in October in all forseeable future years.
As far as I could see from the television coverage, the Gold Helmet drew only a modest crowd, and attracted almost exclusively second-rank international riders. The police were stressed by having so many major events on one weekend (there were also top home games for the Pardubice ice-hockey team and the Pardubice basketball team in the course of the weekend). The hotels and places of entertainment lost out, and taxi drivers complained that they had only one weekend this year, instead of two, for gouging foreign guests.
