20 horses have been declared to run in the Velka Pardubicka with
Česká pojišťovna on Sunday, October 8th, including three trained by top steeplechase trainers in France. Last year’s winner, Charme Look will be ridden this time by Marek Stromský (picture), who is famous as the unluckiest jockey in the history of the race, which goes back to 1871.

All three of the French horses have some decent recent form. Virtus dEstruval and Songe d’Estruval are both trained by Guillaume Macaire. Virtus dEstruval will be ridden by Jan Faltejsek, who has ridden 4 of the last 5 winners of the Velka Pardubicka. Songe d’ Estruval will be ridden by Colm McCormack. Trainer Emmanuel Clayeux is bringing, which won a race at Cheltenham in January.

Josef Váňa always has a strong set of runners in this race. All four of his horses are serious contenders. Zarif will be ridden by Josef Bartoš, No Time to Lose by Josef Váňa, jnr., and Ange Guardian, last year‘s second finisher, by Jan Kratochvíl. The least fancied of the Váňa-trained runners, Power Zar, won the September qualification race at Pardubice, and will be ridden by Sertash Ferhanov, a Bulgarian jockey who is second in our jumps jockeys championship this year.

An interesting runner is Delight My Fire. This mare won the Labe Stakes at the Velka meeting last year, and has not been back to Pardubice since. She ran creditably at Cheltenham last year, before falling at the 5th from home when still apparently in contention. She recently won the Wielka Wroclawska. Her Swedish jockey Niklas Lovén has repeatedly travelled remarkable distances to ride this mare.

Horses that have done well in the race often do so again. Nikas, disqualified after being first past the post two years ago, seems to be past his best. So do Kasim and Universe of Gracie. All three have some VP form, but are now 12 years old, and have not done much in the last two years.

The others would have to run the race of their life to finish in the first five.
