Betino, the de-facto monopoly on-course bookmaker at the Czech racecourses quite often leaves me shaking my head. On Saturday, May 26^th the result of the seventh race at Pardubice was that no. 2 Anaking won, and no.4 Achsar deadheated with no. 6 Bouba Loup for second place. I was in the seemingly happy position of holding a winning tricast bet ticket (i.e. first three in the correct order) for both 2-4-6 and 2-6-4. I expected the tricast pool to be divided into two, and to receive a share for 2-4-6 and another share for 2-6-4. However, no dividend was displayed for the tricast!

I asked what had happened, and the man who has been responsible for Betino for many years explained that Betino pays out according to the official result, and the official result was 1. Anaking, 2. Achsar, 2. Bouba Loup. And he showed me the official document. Since there was no third finisher, he smiled, the tricast would not be paid out.

This responsible person had not been communicating with the cashiers, who had offered me a single modest dividend, but could not explain to me whether they were paying out for 2-4-6 or for 2-6-4. Presumably not for both 2-4-6 and 2-6-4, as they did not know what the single payment consisted of.

It is quite possible that Betino has changed its rules in such a way that my two bets are both losers. It is the kind of thing a monopoly bookmaker does.
