Martin Laube: Doing well in Germany so far

I translated an interview with Czech jockey Martin Laube not much more than a year ago  http://www.dostihovy-svet.cz/cs/node/7913. A new interview taken by Petr Guth has now appeared on the Dostihový svět English language pages, and I will translate it in an abridged version. Martin is one of the young Czech riders who takes advantage of the opportunity to ride in a number of EU countries, and it is good to hear that he is now doing well in Germany. The photo was taken by Petr Guth.

Until August 4th, Martin Laube was still waiting for his first winner of the season in the Czech Republic. On that date, however, he rode two winners at Karlovy Vary for trainer Greg Wroblewski. He then went on to complete an outstanding weekend by riding three winners in Germany. No wonder he was he was pleased when I spoke to him.

The main thing for him this year is Germany, where he rides for Slovak trainer Jan Korpas. He is very pleased with his move to Germany.

Considering it’s my first year there, it’s going really well. Before the season began, Jan Korpas and I said it would be good to have about ten winners in the season – and after the meeting at Bad Doberan I’ve already had twelve. That means that things are going better than anticipated.

Martin Laube feels that Germany is a very competitive environment for him, and he is trying to break through the best he can.

It’s quite hard. There are jockeys fighting for every ride. I’m lucky to have our yard behind me, and my agent works hard to get some rides for me. The competition is strong and there are not so many horses. Things work out here and there, but a few more rides wouldn’t do any harm.

His favourite courses are Berlin Hoppegarten and Hannover, and he also likes to get back to the Czech racecourses.

Whenever I have time and I don’t have commitments in Germany, I’m definitely happy to come back.

If he comes back in the kind of form he showed at Karlovy Vary, there will certainly continue to be plenty of interest in Martin Laube's services as a jockey.
