The last of the four VP qualification races at Pardubice racecourse this year was run on Saturday, September 7th. There had been plenty of rain in the weeks before the race, the course was in good condition, and the going was good.

The nine runners set off at a reasonable pace, with various horses taking the lead in the early stages. As they emerged from behind the copse, after the Gardens Double Fence (Fences 9, 10), Dulcar de Sivola, running erratically, took off into the lead. After the third from home, Talent went to the front, and none of the others put in much of a challenge. In the end, Talent won comfortably by 6 lengths. Váňa-trained Theophilos never showed much, but came through at the end of the race to take second place. Váňa-trained Mazhilis, which won the Gran Premio di Merano three years ago, was running in his first VP qualification race, and did quite well to take third place. 2015 VP winner Ribelino has shown very little form in recent years, and his modest fourth place was his best performance for some time.

2018 VP winner Tzigane du Berlais seemed to run listlessly, and there was no foward move from him. Krocoleon almost lost his rider early in the race, and did not show much. Dulcar de Sivola ran out of steam after the  third from home, after running very freely in the middle of the race. Valtz and Amadeon failed to get round, and therefore failed to qualify for the Velka.

Talent had not run since he won the May 2018 qualification race. Provided that he is OK, he will be supplemented for the Velka.

Talent’s trainer, Hana Kabelková (photo) had the best weekend of her life as a trainer, as Reki got up in the last few strides to win the Wielka Wroclawska on September 8th.

Jan Faltejsek was bemused by Tzigane du Berlais’ performance, but he won three of the other races on the Saturday at Pardubice, and two more races at Merano on the Sunday. All five of these winners, and also Tzigane du Berlais, are owned by Jockey Club  president Jiří Chavát and  trained by Pavel Tůma.

In an earlier Category II race, over 4 500 metres, Player comfortably beat Hegnus, which had made a mistake at the Big Water Jump. This was a good performance by Player, which will now probably be supplemented for the VP.

Supplementary entries for the VP can be made until midday on September 26th, and the declaration to run date for the VP is Friday, October 4th, at 10 a.m.
