Only 23 horses were entered for the Velka Pardubicka in May, and it is a surprise that there are as many as 21 declared runners for the big race, which will be run at 4.40 pm on Sunday, October 13th. Last year’s winner, Tzigane du Berlais is likely to be the favourite, with Talent, clear winner of the September qualification race at Pardubice also well fancied. None of the four horses trained by Josef Váňa senior - Ange Guardian, Theophilos, Mazhilis and Zarif -  stands out, though the jockey assignments suggest that Mazhilis and Theophilos are more fancied than the other two.

Pardubice racecourse is reported to be in good shape. There has been quite a lot of rain in recent weeks in east Bohemia, and more is forecast for the coming days.
