19 horses entered for the Velka Pardubicka. No Time To Lose is the favourite
Nineteen horses have been entered for the 131st running of the Velka Pardubicka with Slavia Insurance, which will take place on Sunday, October 10th at Pardubice racecourse. The entries include three past winners of the race – Hegnus (2020), Theophilos (2018) and 2017 winner No Time To Lose.
This year, there was no traditional entry deadline in May for the race, and Czech racing fans had been waiting all summer for the announcement of the entries on September 23rd. The nineteen entered horses can be expected to provide a good size field for the big race. There are a number of good quality entries.
The winners of the four VP qualification races, run at Pardubice in May (No Time To Lose), June (Evžen), August (Lombargini) and September (Kaiserwalzer) are all entered. No Time To Lose and Evžen both won impressively against strong fields. Lombargini was an easy winner, but against a weak field, and Kaiserwalzer’s win was a surprise, and was against weak opposition.
As usual, trainer Josef Váňa senior is well represented. His entries include two past winners of the race, No Time To Lose (2017) and Theophilos (2018). No Time To Lose, now 12 years old, has made an impressive comeback this year, winning both of his races – the May VP qualification race at Pardubice, and then a race against our best two mile crosscountry chasers at Pardubice in August. The third Váňa entry is 6-y-o Mahe King, a promising youg crosscountry chaser.
Last year’s winner, Hegnus, trained by Radek Holčák, is now 13 years old. In his only race this year, he finished 5th in the 2nd VP qualification race.
Owner Nýznerov has three promising entries, Player, Stretton and Sztorm, each with a different trainer. This probably is not the ideal race for Sztorm, which at the age of 12 is still producing good results at Wroclaw. However, Sztorm’s 2nd place in the May qualification race was his best performance yet over the obstacles at Pardubice. Player (2020) and Stretton (2018) have both finished in second place in past Velkas.
There are four Slovak-trained entries. Trainer Jaroslav Brečka is represented by Kaiserwalzer, winner of this year’s 4th qualification race. Jaroslav Brečka rode Quirinus to victory in the VP in the early 1990s, and then rode the horse in the Aintree Grand National. Another Slovak-trained entry is Vandual, now 13 years old. He finished in 3rd place in the 2020 Velka Pardubicka, not far behind Hegnus, and he finished 3rd in the August qualification race, well beaten by Lombargini. The other two Slovak-trained entries, Star and Paris Eiffel, are outsiders.
There are no entries that are trained outside the Czech Republic and Slovakia. However, the only mare in the race, Vanesse, trained by Pavel Vítek, has raced only abroad, in France. Her record is unimpressive, and she has no experience of running at Pardubice.
Runners and riders will be declared on Friday, October 1st.
After the entries were announced, Tipsport offered 3:1 against No Time To Lose; 5.5:1 against Hegnus and Evžen, 8.5:1 against Player; and 10:1 against Lombargini and Theophilos. Tipsport offered 20:1 against Kaiserwalzer, winner of the September qualification race, and 500:1 against the biggest outsider, Beau Rochelais.
