Orphee des Blins wins the Velka Pardubicka very easily

For the second year in succession, Orphee des Blins won the Velka Pardubicka brilliantly and very easily. As far as she was concerned, the race went very much the way it went 12 months earlier. Again, she went straight into the lead, and jumped every fence perfectly, again with the exception of the Irish Bank, where she was a bit hesitant. By the next fence, the Popkovice Turn, she was back in the lead. Like last year, she went away from the others after the Big Water Jump and broke the hearts of those horses that tried to go with her. After Havel's Fence, four from home, she needed only to stay on her feet to win, which was no problem for her. The winning margin was a distance, easing up.

Behind Orphee des Blins, the race was not much like last year's renewal. Horses fell or knocked into each othere, one here and two there. None fell at the Taxis, however, Orphee des Blins had shown them how, and they just followed. Tropic de Brion, a French horse brought to be trained in the Czech Republic shortly before the race, pursued the leader, and so did Trezor, though at a slightly greater distance than last year. Josef Vana senior, on Tiumen, was a long way behind the leaders by the time they went behind the copse for the second time. Trezor seemed to be going well, and to be the only possible threat to the leader, unless Tropic de Brion had something left. Trezor hit Havel's Jump hard and Josef Bartos came off. At that point, with almost a kilometre to go, there were just two questions: how far would Orphee win by, and which might be capable of finishing second. By the last fence, Josef Vana senior was making a challenge for 2nd place on Tiumen, but the horse hit the fence hard, and ejected his rider. Nikas, ridden by Dusan Andres, got over the line in second place, and Klaus, ridden by Jaroslav Myska came 3rd, after a moderate performance. The other three finishers, out of 20 runners, were Kasim, Peintre Abstrait and Tropic de Brion, in that order.

It was again a completely dominant performance by Orphe des Blins, owned by Pegas (Jiri Travnicek), trained by Greg Wroblewski and ridden by Jan Faltejsek. Of the foreign horses, only Tropic de Brion showed at all. Mount Sion fell at the third, the first of the water jumps, and sadly had to be put down. The last of the foreign horses left in the race was Zest for Lifewhich was involved in a carambole in midfield, after the Drop, obstacle no. 15, and jockey Sam Waley-Cohen was unseated.

It was an afternoon of falls and unseatings, with favourites going down and rank outsiders winning several races. These included the Labe Prize, considered a trial race for future VP candidates. This race was won well by the British-trained Sarika, owned by Jane Williams, trained by Nick Williams, and ridden by French jockey Alain de Chitray.

The afternoon's racing was held on good ground on a sunny warm mid-October afternoon in front of a big crowd of perhaps 25 000. After falling at the last fence, Josef Vana senior picked himself up and walked down the last 300 metres to a very big round of applause. If this was his last race, it was a worthy end. On a lovely October late afternoon, he was indeed walking off towards where the sun was about to set, with a large crowd saying adieu, or was it only au revoir - on October 12th, 2014!
