Cheeky Chappie wins the Czech St Leger

Czech Derby winner Cheeky Chappie confirmed that he is our best three-year-old over longer distances by winning the Czech St Lege rwith Prague 5 city district, at Prague Velka Chuchle as the even-money favourite on August 31, in exactly the same manner as he had won the Derby ten weeks earlier. Again, the race was run at a true pace, Jiří Chaloupka kept him at the rear of the field and brought him with a late run, and got up in the last 50 metres. These were two masterly and stylish rides by Jiří Chaloupka.

Irish-bred Cheeky Chappie is by High Chaparral(IRE), out of Cheeky Weeky (GB) (Cadeaux Genereux(GB)). He is owned by Monte Negro (Jiří Posád) and trained by Radek Holčák. New Attack, by New Approach, was beaten by a neck into second place, after setting some of the pace, and Czech-bred Aztek, by Moonjaz, was a short-head behind in third place.

Jiří Posád, who has only owned racehorses for four years, and has never owned more than a handful, continued his remarkable run of successes. He has won our last three Derbies, with Kadyny, Mister Aviation and Cheeky Chappie, and our last two St Legers with Never on Sunday and now Cheeky Chappie. He also won the Pardubice Gold Cup in June this year with a highly promising 5-y-o chaser, Brog Deas.
