Ländler wins the Swedish Grand National

The German dominance of the Swedish Grand National continues. On Saturday, German-trained Ländler, ridden by Czech jockey Lukáš Sloup, won Scandinavia's most prestigious steeplechase. It was the fifth victory in the Swedish Grand National for Germany in as many years, but it was trainer Anna Schleusner-Fruhriep’s first winner in the race.

Ländler took the lead halfway through the race and pulled away to win comfortably from Czech-trained Hawa Bali, ridden by Marek Stromský. Norwegian-trained Monfalcone finished third.

It was the first winner this year for Lukáš Sloup, for whom this is one of his greatest successes as a jockey.

Czech trainer Stanislav Popelka took four horses for the long journey to Strömsholm racecourse. He is surely very pleased with his second place in the Swedish Grand National, and with Marcus Aurelius’ win in one of the supporting races.
