Red day at Pardubice

Horseracing is not just a sporting occasion but is traditionally also a social event. Certain dress rules can therefore be announced, and in Melbourne a dress code colour is recommended. Let us try playing with colours here in Pardubice. For the first qualification race for the 127th running of the Velka Pardubicka with Česká pojišťovna we are declaring red as the colour for the day!

The idea to try something like on Melbourne Cup day came from Jiří Skalický, a member of the presidium of Dostihový Klub, a members club at Pardubice racecourse. “I’m convinced that elegance goes together with horseracing. Before the Melbourne Cup, which is the high point of the season over there, like the Velka Pardubicka is here, fashion designers offer their recommendations on how to dress, and they set fashions. I wanted to bring something like that into the Czech racing scene,” Jiří Skalický explains.

How is this idea to be implemented? It depends on racegoers. Dostihový spolek is therefore calling on fans to come in a red outfit, or at least to wear a red accessory. Photograph yourself and post the photo on Facebook. We will see whether we can paint qualification day red!

This article, probably a Pardubice racecourse press release, appeared on the Galopp Reporter website. I translate the first three readers’ comments. Jiří Skalický, a member of the Pardubice region parliament for the Top 09 party, should not be confused with Michael Skalický, a former crisis manager of Dostihový spolek and also a fashion guru.

You have misrepresented the fashion guru who made a show in the paddock in a suit with short trousers. It’s a pity I can’t find the photo! :-).

[Red Rum, I think, has confused Jiří Skalický and Michael Skalický, whose overgrown schoolboy look did not catch on in 2016]

Do you really have enough racegoers to be able to allow yourself to hassle them like this? t

It would be better if a member of the supervisory board made sure that the benches were given a wipe, so that I don’t have to take my trousers and coat to the cleaners after every race day.
