When should I get there? There are trains from Hlavni nadrazi at 17 minutes and 47 minutes after each hour. The same train leaves Smichovske nadrazi at 25 minutes and 55 minutes after each hour. The trains arrive at Praha Velka Chuchle on the hour and on the half hour. To see the opening ceremony, take the 13 17 train, line S7, from Hlavni nadrazi. Alternatively, arrive later. It is up to you.
How do I get into the racecourse? The main entrance is right next to the railway station. Show your railway ticket or your public transport pass to get into the racecourse for CzK 100.
How are things organized? You go in, and you can move freely in most of the racecourse area. For the races, it is good to have a view from the grandstand. But the race can be seen again on television, so don’t worry about missing it.
What to do between the races? There is an interval of 30 – 40 minutes between races. You can sit and talk, you can eat and drink. There are various entertainments and shows, including entertainments for children. It is recommended to go to the parade ring, and see the horses for the next race parading, and the jockeys getting their orders from the owner and/or the trainer. A horse may catch your eye, and you may want to bet on it. Then you can go and bet on the race, if you want to. All of these things are optional – it is up to you.
You mentioned betting. Yes, it is optional. At our racecourse, there is only one bookmaker, Betino. You can bet at fixed odds (you know when you bet exactly how much you can win), or you can bet in a pool (all the bets are collected, Betino takes its handling fee, and the money in the pool is shared among the winning ticket holders).
There is fixed odds betting TO WIN (na viteze); for a WIN and a PLACE (each way – vitez-misto); and for FIRST or SECOND PLACE; for FIRST, SECOND or THIRD PLACE; for FIRST, SECOND, THIRD or FOURTH PLACE; and for FIRST, SECOND, THIRD, FOURTH or FIFTH PLACE.
The pool betting is for a duo bet (FIRST and SECOND, in the correct order – male poradi) and for a trifecta bet (FIRST, SECOND and THIRD, in the correct order – velke poradi.
How can I meet my favorite jockey? The opening ceremony is at 2 pm. You can get close when he is in the parade ring, preparing to ride in the next race. At 5 pm, all the international jockeys will be signing autographs. At the winners’ ceremony, after the last race, all the international jockeys are likely to join the spectators to congratulate the winners.
What is the minimum bet? CzK 20, and for a pool bet the minimum is CzK 10.
What if it rains? Don’t worry. There is plenty of shelter at the racecourse, under and inside the grandstand.
What about the catering? Not bad. The prices are very reasonable. There is also an upmarket restaurant, if you want.
Should I come with my children, or with my boyfriend/girlfriend? Absolutely. Children can get excited, run around, make a noise, without annoying anyone, not even their parents. There are plenty entertainments for children. You can even give your children a lot of attention and quality time, as the races only take up a couple of minutes, at intervals of 30 minutes and more. Experienced men and women know that the racecourse can be a good, relaxed place to spend time with a “significant other”. It is also a good place to make new friends and meet old friends.
When should I leave? With nine races on the card, it is a long afternoon. Trains leave for the city centre every half hour, at 22 minutes past the hour and at 52 minutes past the hour. Go home when you like!
What if I like it and want to go to the races at Velka Chuchle again? You are in luck. There are races at Velka Chuchle every Sunday afternoon until the end of October, with the exception of October 8th, which is Velka Pardubicka day, and you will want to go to Pardubice for that. The first race is normally at 2 pm in September and at 1 pm in October.
Is there anything else I should know? Well, there is a photography competition, with prize money of CzK 10 000 to be shared among the three best. And you should know that all visitors are very welcome at Velka Chuchle.
