All 18 entries for the 130th running of the Velka Pardubicka have been declared to run in the race, which will be off at 4.40 p.m.

There was a lot of interest in the riders that would be engaged, in particular for the four horses trained by Josef Váňa senior. Josef Bartoš hurt a knee at Merano at the end of September. He had been expected to ride Theophilos, on which he won the VP in 2019. Josef Váňa senior has got together four riders for his four runners, each of which has a decent chance in the race: Jan Kratochvíl and Jiří Kousek, who are both committed to ride for the Váňas, and also Jan Odložil and Jakub Kocman. Theophilos, which is currently the favourite for the race, will be ridden by Jan Odložil, who has in recent years made himself into a dependable jockey. Jan Kratochvíl has chosen, or been chosen for, Sottovento. Sottovento was at the beginning of the season the least fancied of the Váňa horses, but he has run a couple of quite impressive qualification races. Jan Kratochvíl won the VP on No Time To Lose in 2017, but he will be ridden this year by Jakub Kocman.  Jan Kratochvíl won the Gran Premio di Milano in 2016 on Mazhilis, which will be ridden on Sunday by Jiří Kousek.

Four jockeys from abroad are riding in the race. Swedish jockey Niklas Lovén is a welcome and frequent guest, and rides quite often for trainer Radim Bodlák. He will be on Catch Life. Romain Juliot rides Slovak-trained Vandual. Hakim Tabet rides in France. He will be on Mahony. Bulgarian jockey Sertash Ferhanov rode for several season in the Czech Republic, but is now based in France. He will be on Casper. All four of these horses are OK rides, but a place in the prizemoney for the first seven places will be a good achievement for any of them.

Veronika Škvařilová-Řezáčová  will be the first woman to ride in the Velka for a few years. She has ridden more than 150 races over fences, and has won 7 of them. She is on All Scater, trained by her mother. The horse has won no prizemoney in his last 10 runs, since 2016, in much easier races than the VP. I hope the Řezáč family will at least be able to celebrate getting round – which is no small achievement, after all.
