An unusually good St Leger

The Czech St Leger was a particularly interesting race this year, and it has been well worthwhile to watch the video of the race several times.

As expected, Rabbit Raillink took the early lead to ensure a genuinely run race for stable mate Love Me, recent winner of the Slovak Derby. After about 400 metres, New Attack, ridden by Slovak champion jockey Zdenko Šmida, took over and stole a lead of a dozen lengths by the end of the back straight. On the last bend, New Attack came back towards the rest of the field, and appeared to be beaten. However, Šmida was just giving him a breather, and New Attack held on to a small lead as the non-stayers fell away. A hundred metres from home, Czech-bred Aztek, ridden by Petr Foret, looked a likely winner. However, he seemed not quite to stay the distance, while New Attack kept going splendidly. Czech Derby winner, Cheeky Chappie, had run at the rear of the field all the way round, and was still in last place entering the finishing straight. His jockey, Jiří Chaloupka, did not immediately find a way through non-stayers, and by the time he got his break, horse and jockey had a lot of work to do. They finally headed New Attack with a couple of strides to go, and Cheeky Chappie won by a neck from New Attack, with Aztek a short head behind in  third place. Fourth and fifth places went to the Rabbit Trhový Štěpánov horses, Rabbit Raillink and Love Me.

Prague Velká Chuchle racecourse was in good condition after the summer break, and we had a St Leger with good horses, well ridden.
