The Czech Derby: some facts and figures

Fifteen horses have been declared to run in the 95th running of the Mercedes-Benz Czech Derby, over 2 400 metres. The race will be run at 3.05 p.m. on Sunday, June 21st. The prize money is CzK 2 500 000.

There was a last-minute drama as no clearance was received by the Czech Jockey Club until the last moment for Spanish-born, French-based jockey Ioritz Mendizabal, stating that he is duly registered as a jockey and is not under suspension,. Mendizabal will ride Dumnonia (for Jockey Club president Jiří Charvát) on Sunday.

Czech champion jockey Bauyrzhan Murzabayev has chosen to ride Aldar, as expected. His stablemate, Aldzarb will be ridden by Irish champion apprentice Patrick Cosgrave, not by Steve Drowne, as had been suggested earlier. Cosgrave was engaged to ride in the Czech Derby last year, but it was clarified rather late in the day that he was still under suspension in Dubai, though he had been cleared to ride in Ireland and the UK, and he was not eligible to ride here. It was due to this experience that the Czech Jockey Club required a formal clearance for all foreign-based riders this year.

The only non Czech-trained runner, Parzival, trained in France at Chantilly, will be ridden by Italian-born Umberto Rispoli, who rides in France.
The draw has generally been quite good to the most favoured horses. However, Aldzarb’s connections will be disappointed to have drawn gate 14. In the Derby trial, the connections asked for an outside draw for Aldzarb, which has a history of being difficult before the race. On that occasion, the outside draw necessitated a scramble for Aldzarb after the start, so the connections decided this time to join in the draw with the other horses. Gate no. 14 is not ideal, but the Derby is 200 metres further than the Derby trial, so the first bend does not come so early, and the outside draw may not be a big disadvantage.
Aldar (6), Oriental Sky (5), Tamarind Cove (7) and Sirius Shine (8) have good draws. Touch of Genius (11), Dumnonia (12) and Aldzarb (14) are less lucky. The two horses owned by Monte Negro, Kifaaya and Dalewari, will be side-by-side in boxes 3 and 4.
