Lagaro and Chardonney Tcheque win the main races at the weekend

The main race last weekend was the Charvát Group Winter Favourite Stakes at Prague Velká Chuchle on Sunday. This race, over 1600 metres, is the top race of the season for 2-y-os. President of the Jockey Club Jiří Charvát has stated that two of his priorities are to obtain better prize money for top class races in general, and to provide some top races for 2-y-os, in particular, so that Czech owners will be more likely to buy their Derby horses as yearlings, and run them here as 2-y-os.

Jiří Charvát’s Charvát Group sponsored the Winter Favourite Stakes, Listed, which was run for prize money of CzK 550 000, equivalent to EUR 20 000. The winner was the Czech-bred co-favourite, Lagaro, by Dalghar out of a Night Shift mare. Lagaro is owned by DAR and trained by Allan Petrlík, and was ridden by Jan Verner. The other co-favourite, Trip to Sydney, owned by Jiří Charvát, disappointed.

The previous day, however, the main race at Most, the Bohemian and Moravian Ustí Region Stakes, Category I, 1 400 metres, went to Jiří Charvát’s Chardonney Tcheque. 7-y-o French-bred Chardonney Tcheque, by One Cool Cat out of Genevale (Unfuwain), has won 16 of his 32 races, all of them at Category I or higher. He is trained by Tomáš Šatra, and was ridden by Jan Raja. Three of the races at Most on Saturday were won by horses owned by Jiří Charvát and trained by veteran trainer Tomáš Šatra.
