The Wielka Wroclawska, the Gran Premio di Merano and the Velka Pardubicka - Central European crosscountry steeplechase festivals in September/October

The three main events in central European steeplechasing, marking the highpoint of our 2019 season, all take place within a five-week period between September 8th and October 13th. Each of the three meetings, at Wroclaw in Poland, at Merano, in the northernmost part of Italy, and at Pardubice, 100 km east of Prague in the Czech Republic, celebrates the varieties of crosscountry steeplechasing in the central European region.

August 2019 newsletter

In these monthly newsletters, I usually mention or discuss the recent weather, and the weather in July 2019 cannot pass unmentioned. All over northern Europe there was extraordinarily hot weather towards the end of the month, peaking on Thursday, July 25th, with all-time record temperatures recorded in the UK and northern France. North of the Alps in central Europe, too, it was very hot.

British amateur rider Nathan Rahman is interested in riding in the Czech Republic

Nathan Rahman is a corporal in the British army who rides in point-to-points and hunter chases, and has also ridden in military races at Sandown and Wincanton.  He won the PPORA Novice Riders’ Championship Final this year. Nathan has discovered and enjoyed central European crosscountry steeplechasing in recent months. He has already made two trips to ride at Merano, and he plans to ride in a race for amateurs there this weekend.

Falcon Baby wins the Czech Oaks

The Rabbit CZ Czech Oaks, 2400 metres, CZK 550 000, was run at Karlovy Vary on Sunday, July 21st. In the Oaks trial on Derby day at Prague Velka Chuchle, there had been pandemonium in the starting boxes, and it was fortunate that fillies and jockeys did not suffer serious injury. In the Oaks itself, the connections of more than half of the field had asked for an outside draw, and numerous trainers had permission to be at the start. Happily, there were no problems this time.

July 2019 newsletter

In these newsletters, I usually report on the weather in the previous month. That used to be easy enough, but two years ago my workplace was moved into a prizewinning new office building with a grey plastic sheet wrapped round its exterior.
