A dead heat in the 2024 Velka Pardubicka

Before Covid, I used to go to the course on Velka Pardubicka day, and then watch the six hours and more on Czech Television’s Sport channel, over and over again for several days, and then report on the race in detail here on the English-language pages of Dostihový svět. Since Covid, I have watched the raceday live on television, and have attempted to write up what happened for fans who do not understand the Czech-language coverage.

Martin Liška is injured and will miss the ride on Argano in the Velka

Martin Liška, trainer and planned jockey of Argano in the Velka Pardubicka, was injured in an unfortunate accident on Thursday. A deer ran across in front of Serena Chope, one of his other horses, which he was preparing to run in the Gold Brooch Stakes for 3-y-o hurdlers at Pardubice this Saturday. Martin ended up underneath the spooked horse, and was taken to hospital with a bruised kidney. The filly also had to be withdrawn from her race.

Josef Bartoš: Adventurers and Contenders

This interview with No 1 Czech jumps jockey Josef Bartoš, taken by Dostihový svět editor Petr Guth, first appeared on our Czech language pages.

Three foreign horses that are unknown to us will run in the Velka Pardubicka. This information will be a breath of fresh air for some, but for others it will raise misgivings. Not just because there might be a winner from abroad, after a period of many years. Even Josef Bartoš, the jockey in the race with the most experience of riding abroad, is not thrilled by the foreign competition.

News and Views on next Sunday's Velka Pardubicka

When at the end of May all 15 runners in the first of the four qualification races at Pardubice completed the course and met the qualification requirements for the 134th running of the Velka Pardubicka, most of  them very competently, it seemed there might be a vast number of entries at the end of September and probably a particularly large and high-quality field.
