In the western and central parts of Prague, where I have spent almost the entire month of November 2019, the weather has been, by our standards, very wet and very mild. There has been plenty of gentle rain, no snow, and little frost. Winter weather has not begun yet, in the relatively low-lying parts of Bohemia.

On October 13th, Josef Bartoš won the Velka Pardubicka for the third time. He had to work hard for his win on Theophilos, but he managed to complete the best fortnight in his career as a jockey.
October 2019 was a surprisingly warm month – the warmest October I remember in my time in the Czech Republic. The month produced a number of very pleasant warm afternoons for racegoers, especially for the Velka Pardubicka weekend and for the long weekend at the end of the month.
Czech-trained Subway Dancer’s name is on the list of entries for the Hong Kong Vase, one of the races at the international meeting in Hong Kong in December. Trainer Zdeno Koplík’s horse, which won a Group 2 race in France last Sunday, figures among the 72 entries, sixty of which are from outside Hong Kong. The 2400-metre Hong Kong Vase will be run on December 8th.
The October newsletter did not appear as intended at the end of September. It has been on my conscience. However, I have done a count, and I was shocked to see that this is the 29th entry on these pages since the September newsletter! That is a crazy amount, and much more than even the most devoted readers would want to read.
Subway Dancer achieved the best performance by a Czech-trained horse last year when he finished 3rd in the Champion Stakes at Ascot. This year, exactly a year later, Subway Dancer was sent to Longchamp, where he won the Group 2 Prix du Conseil de Paris, over 2 200 metres.
There is a video with a pretty good English-language commentary on the Velka Pardubicka on Racing TV, which you can find quite easily on YouTube. Well done, the commentator, who was not put off by the difficult Czech or French names of many of the 21 runners, and also knew the complicated course followed by the horses very well!
