Cheeky Chappie wins the Czech St Leger

Czech Derby winner Cheeky Chappie confirmed that he is our best three-year-old over longer distances by winning the Czech St Lege rwith Prague 5 city district, at Prague Velka Chuchle as the even-money favourite on August 31, in exactly the same manner as he had won the Derby ten weeks earlier. Again, the race was run at a true pace, Jiří Chaloupka kept him at the rear of the field and brought him with a late run, and got up in the last 50 metres. These were two masterly and stylish rides by Jiří Chaloupka.

Evening racing at Lysa-nad-Labem on Saturday

The only race meeting in the Czech Republic this weekend is on Saturday, at Lysa-nad-Labem. The first race is at 4.30 p.m., and there are eight races on the card.

Lysa held an evening meeting a year ago, when it was very hot, and it was a popular event with a good crowd. It seems to be a good idea to have a late start again this weekend, when a warm afternoon is forecast.

This will be a mixed meeting, with races of only moderate quality, but with at least nine runners declared for each of the races.

August 2014 newsletter

The month of July in most parts of the Czech Republic can be summed up in two adjectives: hot and dry. Not quite as hot and dry as last year, perhaps, but hot enough. Now that the end of the month is coming, there is rain around, and hailstorms threaten.
