The 2020 steeplechase season at Pardubice made a belated start on Saturday, June 20th. It was the first time this year after the lockdown in the Czech Republic that 2 500 racegoers were allowed to enter the racecourse area, though the crowd that turned up on a very wet afternoon was probably quite a lot less than that.
In a press release, Dostihový Spolek, organisers of events at Pardubice racecourse, has announced that its first two meetings of the 2020 season are planned for June 20th and July 4th.
In the years since 2015, the European Jockeys’ Cup has won a fixed place for itself in the Czech horseracing calendar. This week, its organizers have come to the conviction that this year’s competition among star jockeys on the top horses in our region should not be frustrated even by the crisis linked with the Covid-19 pandemic.
May 2020 was warm and dry at first, but long-term readers of these newsletters may recall that I tend to warn them in advance not to plant their carrots until the days of the ice saints have passed. St. Pankrac’s day is May 12th , St Servac is celebrated on May 13th, and St. Bonifac on May 14th.
The Czech horseracing season opened on a Monday afternoon at Most racecourse on May 18th. It was a late start, to the season, of course, but congratulations to everybody who ensured that racing, behind closed doors, took place at the first possible opportunity, on the day when the state of emergency in the Czech Republic was lifted.
As soon as the Czech authorities announced, a couple of weeks ago, that sports events could go ahead as from Monday, May 18th, the Jockey Club of the Czech Republic promptly announced the race conditions for a meeting at Most racecourse, on Monday May 18th. The meeting will be held behind closed doors, under strict health regulations. No doubt, the racecourse and the racing authorities will do their best to comply with the regulations, and everything will surely be carefully monitored.
Entries have closed for the 130th running of the Velka Pardubicka, which will be run at Pardubice racecourse on Sunday, October 11th. Late entries can be made until September 24th.
