Runners and riders have been announced for the evening meeting at Prague Velká Chuchle racecourse on Thursday, July 16th. The first race is at 18.30, and there are five races on the card. The lack of high quality horses is more than compensated by the numbers of runners. Each of the races has at least 13 declared runners, and two have 16 runners, the maximum number of spaces in the starting boxes.
This is the 14th season that Petr Drahoš has headed TMM s.r.o., organizers of horseracing at Prague Velká Chuchle.
The coming weekend features two festival meetings, both in upland locations.
Entries closed on July 2nd for the main races to be run at Wroclaw on the first weekend in September. The Wielka Wroclawska Steeplechase has attracted 27 entries, while the Wielka Partynicka Hurdle has 17 entries.
Fans of steeplechasing should certainly experience the Velka Pardubicka at least once in their lifetime. Pardubice racecourse, 100 km east of Prague, was opened in 1840, and was based on the way Aintree racecourse was at that time.
We regret to announce that Vojtěch Crha passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, June 27th at the age of twenty-two. This talented young rider had been attending the secondary school for horsebreeding at Kladruby nad Labem as a part-time student, and had been working at the training centre of steeplechasing legend Josef Váňa.
June is always a big month in our short, seven-month racing season, with a lot of last-minute activity and talk about the Czech Derby. For those whose interest in Czech racing is mainly in jumps racing, there are two meetings at Pardubice, one headed by the Pardubice Gold Cup and the other headed by the second qualification race for the Velka Pardubicka.
The second of the four qualification races for the Velka Pardubicka was run on good ground at Pardubice on June 27th. Seventeen horses went to the start, and 16 of them finished and therefore qualified for the Velka, which will be run on Sunday, October 11th. It was a cool afternoon for the end of June, with an overcast sky but only a few spots of rain.
This weekend there are race meetings at Pardubice, on Saturday, first race at 1 p.m., and at Slušovice on Sunday, first race at 2 p.m. At Pardubice, all the races are over jumps, at Slušovice all the races are on the flat.
Touch of Genius won the Czech Derby comfortably by 1½ lengths from Oriental Sky, with Tamarind Cove a head behind in third place. It was a cool, overcast day, and there had been enough recent rain to make the going good, and softish in places. Ideal Approach pulled hard at the beginning of the race, but Radek Koplík soon brought him more or less under control and allowed him to set a good pace.
